BeAble Capital invests 600,000 euros in Calpech, spin-off of the Universidad de Alicante
BeAble Capital, a private equity fund manager specialized in investment in Deep Science technologies, has invested 600,000 euros in Calpech, a spin-off of the Universidad de Alicante, which has developed and patented a process to valorize by-products resulting from the olive oil manufacturing process.
Calpech has developed a product based on iron and carbon nanoparticles that is used as an additive in the biogas and biomethane industry, renewable fuels that play an essential role in the decarbonization process to ensure a fast, resilient and affordable energy transition. These gases are obtained from organic waste from different industries, allowing those wastes to be valorized sustainably.
The Calpech product is introduced at the digester level, where the decomposition of organic matter takes place, and has a direct effect on the amount of biogas generated, achieving increases in yield of up to 40%. Additionally, Calpech’s additive significantly reduces the level of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, a corrosive, toxic gas that is harmful to the environment.
The company has already carried out initial pilot tests with customers and has managed to scale production to the level of tons. In addition, Calpech is a technology-based company with high innovation potential and the capacity to develop new applications; it currently has other lines of development to apply its iron nanoparticles in the agricultural industry and in the field of bioremediation.
The novel technology developed by Calpech allows treating and valorizing organic waste to obtain products with environmental applications, a true example of sustainability and circular economy. “Calpech’s technology has a great deal of potential and shows that the valorization of waste is essential if we truly want to achieve a more sustainable industry,” commented Almudena Trigo, president and founding partner of BeAble Capital.
With 85 million euros under management, BeAble Capital invests in Deep Science technologies that can be scalable and that are aligned with the goals of the Agenda 2030.
